Some of my earliest childhood experiences with reptiles and amphibians came from exploring the well in our backyard where I found leopard frogs, bullfrogs, eastern tiger salamanders, and occasional water snakes. As I got older my explorations expanded to include nearby woods, fields, streams or any place that I could walk or ride a bike.

Getting my drivers license opened up a whole new world of opportunities. By the end of my 16th year I had hunted at least once 19 different states, began buying, selling and trading animals, and started giving educational presentations to various groups.

While attending college I worked as a field research assistant observing and collecting data on bullfrogs, American toads, and eastern tiger salamanders. I also completed several honors classes which included studies on Burmese pythons, timber rattlesnakes, eastern massasaugas, copperheads, and behavioral evolution in venomous reptiles.

Immediately after graduating from college I went to work for a well known animal importer. My plan was to work for a year or two and then continue with my education. But within months after my arrival in Florida I was caught up in the trade and became an importer myself.

Over the years I have kept a large variety mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians including many that were were rare and unusual. In spite of these blessings many of my greatest pleasures come from some of the most common animals. Among my favorites are snapping turtles, toads, and rattlesnakes; particularly timbers, easterns, and westerns.
